    At last year's Detroit Auto Show, Volvo brought along a road-ready C30 Electric. In the intervening months, we've driven the great little car, but we're glad we were not behind the wheel when one crashed at 40 miles per hour recently. Thankfully, nobody was, since the car was involved in a planned crash test by Volvo to, in the words of Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby, "show the world what a truly safe electric car looks like after a collision with high-speed impact."

    Volvo, as you probably know, prides itself on safety, but dealing with 310 pounds of a 24 kWh pack of lithium batteries (and a tiny ethanol-powered heater) means rethinking the way the car's safety zones need to be designed. Jacoby said that, "Our tests show it is vital to separate the batteries from the electric car's crumple zones to make it as safe as a conventional car."

    A fully charged C30 Electric was sent into a standard offset collision - where 40 percent of the car hit a barrier at 40 mph - last month, and the resulting wreck will be on display at the Detroit Auto Show beginning at today's media days. According to a statement by Jan Ivarsson, Volvo's senior manager for safety strategy & requirements:
    The test produced exactly the results we expected. The C30 Electric offers the very same high safety level as a C30 with a combustion engine. The front deformed and distributed the crash energy as we expected. Both the batteries and the cables that are part of the electric system remained entirely intact after the collision.
    Some changes Volvo implemented with the C30 Electric compared to the internal combustion C30 are reinforced front crumple zones to make up for the smaller motor, a reinforced structure around the battery pack and redundant fuses and sensors that can cut the power when some moron crosses into your lane and plows into your new EV.     Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby has never been the biggest fan of electric vehicles (EVs), having said in the past that mainstream affordability and widespread readiness are many years away. Speaking at the Los Angeles Auto Show today, Jacoby sounded a slightly different tune - for a while.

    In a speech to the Motor Press Guild, Jacoby highlighted his company's work on plug-in vehicles. Earlier this year, Jacoby moved from Volkswagen to the top spot at Volvo and has had to adjust to his new home. After all, Volvo is further along the plug-in vehicle path than Volkswagen is. Last month, Volvo said it will offer a limited production run of electrified C30s early next year and a plug-in hybrid diesel in 2012. Compare this to VW's 2013-2014 timeline.

    In any case, Jacoby touted the electric C30's zero-emission status, saying, "This car is powered solely by electricity and entirely without exhaust emissions." This is only partly true, because, as far as we know, the electric C30 has an ethanol-burning engine that provides heat to the cabin. We're going to get behind the wheel of one of these vehicles later today, so we'll double-check if anything has changed.

    One thing we know has changed is Jacoby's slight softening on his anti-EV stance. Jacoby is still bullish on increased use of diesel engines in the U.S. market, but we wanted to know what convinced him to show his pro-EV side. He replied:
    Maybe because I've driven the Volvo prototypes. It's really fun to drive the C30 DRIVe electric. I like also the prototypes which are running on the road already with respect to the plug-in hybrid. This is a car where we are really competitive and we can utilize our knowledge with the electrification, not only for pure electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids, but we will use them also to empower our traditional downsized gasoline engines. So, we are using electrification in various areas. It is an absolutely new field for us, as well. It is necessary for us to start now. It will take quite a lot of time until we see a significant share of electric vehicles in the market, but we have to work on this technology right now in order to gain experience.
    The longest journey start with the smallest step... onto an EV's accelerator pedal.

    Volvo unleashed some big news at the Paris Motor Show. In case you missed it, that's when the automaker confirmed that the C30 battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept was ready to get its production groove on. Shortly thereafter, Volvo's Paul Gustavsson, the architect behind the company's electrification strategy, confirmed that the plug-in C30 will indeed hit the U.S. market. Volvo's first wave of electric C30s are tooling around Sweden and the initial reaction is reportedly quite positive.

    Volvo's development and production of the C30 is humming along, albeit at a slow and deliberate pace. The automaker plans to lease 90 or so C30 BEVs to customers throughout Sweden and will closely watch how the vehicles cope with the rigors of real-world use. It will use this data to refine the technology before launching the vehicle to the public in 2013. This refinement, Volvo chief executive officer Stefan Jacoboy states, will lead to a product that, "sets the standard in the industry."

    Additionally, Gustavsson claims that the battery-powered C30 is a no-compromise vehicle that, "offers the same comfort, the same space and the same safety as the C30." Safety is the backbone of Volvo, and the electric C30's crash test video speaks for itself. If the C30 electric is destined to "set the industry standard," then one could only hope that the automaker's upcoming plug-in hybrid, as well as its fuel cell range-extended electric vehicle prototype, raise the bar to new heights as well.

    What, haven't you heard that Volvo is prototyping a fuel cell range extender for its C30 electric? No. That's okay, we'll fill you in. Volvo aims to have two working prototypes that utilize fuel cell technology to extend the range of its battery-powered C30. The prototypes, developed with assistance from Powercell Sweden AB, should hit the streets by 2012. Volvo anticipates that the fuel cell unit will provide the C30 with at least 155 miles of additional range. If all goes as planned, a production version could follow.

    Volvo, one of the largest bus manufacturers in the world, has the hybrid coach segment covered with a duo of green people movers that stand above the pack. Whether it's the single-level Volvo 7700 or the double-decker B5L hybrid, Volvo's assortment of hybrid buses are ready to tackle pretty much any people-hauling duties required. In May of this year, Volvo Bus Corporation began serial production of hybrid buses and immediately secured more than 150 orders in Europe. Now, thoughts of expansion have taken over and Volvo has agreed to bring its hybrid lineup of people movers to Mexico and Brazil for field trials.

    A lone Volvo 7700 Hybrid has arrived in Mexico City where it will see duty in the historic center area and also be featured at an upcoming conference on sustainable transport in Mexico City and at the COP 16 climate conference in Cancun. Volvo also shipped a single 7700 Hybrid bus to South America where it will undergo field testing in the Brazilian cities of Curitiba, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and, later, in Bogota, Columbia. Volvo is confident that hybrid buses will sweep the world and hopes that its trials in Mexico and South America prove that the vehicle's benefits extend beyond reduced fuel consumption. Volvo Bus Corporation's environmental manager, Edward Jobson, envisions a booming hybrid bus market with Volvo leading the way:
    I am convinced that hybrid buses will dominate city traffic globally in a few years' time and Volvo has great prospects of becoming one of the largest suppliers of such buses.
    Competition in the hybrid bus market may be sparse, but you can bet that other companies dream of capturing the segment as well.

    Volvo's big news at the Paris Motor Show was the confirmation that the C30 battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept would be put into production. We saw the all-electric car at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year and again in Indianapolis during an EnerDel event. The information we heard back then - that the C30 BEV will not come to the U.S. is now outdated and wrong, as Paul Gustavsson, the architect behind Volvo's electrification strategy, told AutoblogGreen in a telephone interview today. Gustavsson told AutoblogGreen that customer demand in both China and America changed some minds and that the plug-in C30 will indeed come to those two markets at some point.

    Ten C30 BEVs are already on the road in Goetborg, Sweden, part of a trial fleet with Energi that began a few weeks ago. More importantly, Gustavsson said that customer deliveries will start in Sweden sometime next year, and that people will be able to get the car for something between a three- and five-year lease. The cost for these leases is not yet set, but Gustavsson said that, surprise, it will likely be higher than a similar liquid-powered car lease. Still, he said, the lease cost should be compared to the full running costs of a standard car, even though Volvo knows that people are willing to pay little more for environmentally conscious vehicles.

    Gustavsson didn't say how many C30 BEVs would be leased, but said it would be in the hundreds and that Volvo is keeping production capacity flexible. This is important, since he said, "Our new owners [Geely] are very keen to focus on electrification," adding that Volvo is trying to figure out how exactly to start C30 BEV test fleets in California and China. Volvo may be moving slowly and cautiously to get its first plug-in vehicles to the people, but Gustavsson said the company thinks electric vehicles will play a bigger role in the industry starting in around 2017-2018. By 2020, he said, Volvo expects electric cars, both plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles, to make up between five and 10 percent of the market. (This post continues after the jump.)
